Domain age explained: registration date, RDAP and website age
Learn what domain age means, where registration dates come from, how RDAP differs from old WHOIS workflows and why domain age is not the same as website age.
What does domain age mean?
Domain age normally means the amount of time since a domain's reported registration or creation date. It describes the registration record, not necessarily the website currently hosted on the domain.
Domain registration date vs website age
A domain can be registered before a website launches, can remain unused, can change owners and can host completely different websites over time. For that reason, a registration date cannot establish how old the current website or its content is.
What is RDAP?
RDAP stands for Registration Data Access Protocol. Domain registries use it to publish structured registration information. Depending on the registry and extension, that information can include creation and expiration dates, domain status, nameservers and registrar or provider data.
Why is RDAP useful for checking domain age?
RDAP returns machine-readable registration records rather than requiring Notinexa to scrape a human-facing WHOIS page. The Notinexa Domain Age Checker uses the registration date reported through RDAP when it is available and calculates the elapsed age locally.
Why might a domain have no creation date?
Coverage and fields vary between registries and domain extensions. A missing creation date does not mean a domain is new. It means the RDAP response used for the lookup did not provide enough information to calculate its registration age reliably.
Does domain age improve SEO?
Registration age by itself should not be treated as an SEO score. An older domain may have accumulated history, links or recognition, but those are separate properties. The registration date alone does not prove authority, quality or ranking ability.
How to check a domain registration date
Use the Notinexa Domain Age Checker. Enter a domain or website URL and the tool will reduce it to the registrable domain, query the relevant RDAP service and show the fields the registry makes available.
