Quick answerA UTM builder adds campaign parameters to a destination URL so analytics tools can attribute visits to a source, medium and campaign. The tagged URL goes to the same page; the extra parameters describe how the visitor arrived.

What is a UTM builder?

A UTM builder — also called a UTM generator or UTM creator — takes your normal landing-page URL and appends campaign parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. When someone clicks that tagged link, analytics software can use those values to group traffic by campaign instead of treating every visit as an unexplained referral.

utm_source

The traffic source or platform: for example google, linkedin, newsletter or a partner name.

utm_medium

The marketing channel: for example cpc, email, social or affiliate.

utm_campaign

The campaign you want to group reporting under, such as september_launch or black_friday.

utm_id, utm_term and utm_content

Optional parameters: a campaign identifier, the paid keyword or audience (utm_term) and the creative or placement (utm_content) when you need more granular attribution.

Practical UTM examples

The simplest possible example. Original URL:

https://example.com/product

Tagged campaign URL:

https://example.com/product?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=september_launch

The same pattern works for every channel. Build the campaign URL with the generator above and adapt the values:

URLs with existing query parameters

If your destination URL already contains query parameters, such as tracking IDs or filters, this UTM builder keeps them and appends the campaign parameters after them. Existing UTM parameters are replaced by the new values so the generated URL carries one clear UTM set.

UTM builder vs URL shortener

A UTM builder adds attribution information to your campaign URL. A URL shortener creates a shorter redirect that hides the destination. They solve different problems: a tagged link stays transparent and keeps working even if the shortener disappears. You can build the tagged URL first and shorten it later if your workflow requires it.

How to use this UTM builder

  1. Paste the destination URL of the page your campaign promotes.
  2. Enter the campaign source, such as google, instagram or newsletter.
  3. Enter the medium, such as cpc for paid clicks, email for newsletters or social for organic posts.
  4. Give the campaign a short, consistent name you will recognise in reports.
  5. Optionally open Optional campaign parameters to add utm_id, utm_term and utm_content.
  6. Press Build UTM URL and copy the generated link into your ad, post or email.

UTM parameters and Google Analytics 4

Google Analytics 4 reads the standard UTM parameters automatically. A utm_source such as newsletter and a utm_medium such as email appear in the Traffic acquisition report as Session source and Session medium, while utm_campaign groups the visits under a campaign. GA4 does not require utm_id, utm_term or utm_content: they are optional and only appear in reports when you set them. No extra configuration is needed for the generated URL to be tracked — the parameters travel inside the link itself. This builder only constructs the URL; it does not send any data to Google Analytics.

UTM builder FAQ

Is a UTM builder the same as a UTM generator?

Yes. UTM builder, UTM generator, UTM creator and campaign URL builder are different names for the same kind of tool: one that adds utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign and other parameters to a destination URL. This page does that in a single form.

Which UTM parameters are required?

The builder asks for a source, a medium and a campaign name because those three produce usable attribution in Google Analytics 4. The optional parameters — utm_term, utm_content and utm_id — are never mandatory and only add detail when you need it. Most teams tag at least source, medium and campaign on every campaign link.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Analytics reports values literally, so Email and email count as two different media. Pick one convention — many teams standardise on lowercase — and keep it consistent across campaigns. The naming option in the builder can lowercase values and replace spaces with hyphens for you.

Can I add UTM parameters to a URL that already has parameters?

Yes. Paste the complete URL and the builder appends the campaign parameters after the existing ones, preserving them. If the URL already contains UTM parameters, they are replaced so the final link carries one coherent set.

Are tagged campaign URLs safe for privacy?

UTM values are visible to anyone who sees the link and can end up in browser history, screenshots and shared documents. Avoid personal or confidential data in campaign values. Notinexa does not fetch or store the URLs you build here; only anonymous aggregate usage counters are retained.

Should I shorten a tagged campaign URL?

You can. A UTM builder and a URL shortener solve different problems, and they are complementary: build the tagged URL first, then shorten it when a long link is impractical. The tagged link keeps working even if the shortener later disappears.
